Jumbalot AI Animated Short

Introducing the first AI animated short for my book, Journey to Jumbalot. This project features multiple clips of the main characters, Alby the housecat and his guide, the annoyingly lovable Fremmy the froguar (frog and jaguar hybrid), as they walk through a colorful forest on their way to the magnificent Kingdom of Jowla. I envisioned my book as an animated film or series while I was writing it and learning how to use Seedance 2.0 helps me bring my characters to life. I know there is a lot of unpleasantness with folks regarding the use of AI, but I certainly cannot afford to pay a professional animator thousands of dollars for something like this.

Who knows, perhaps an agent or a movie studio will see one of these clips and realize that the world of Jumbalot has the potential to become much more than a book. I'm not giving up on my dream :)

A huge shout-out to University of South Florida Zimmerman students Regina Segovia, Nicholas Bowen, and Ashika Patel for an outstanding presentation of their final media kit project featuring my book, Journey to Jumbalot. They provided valuable ideas on promoting my book through social media, press releases, in-person events, and interactive drawing contests. I would also like to express my gratitude to Dr. Mimi Perreault for reaching out to me about her PR Writing course’s media kit project.

It’s hard to believe that I released my book five years ago. Despite winning several awards and receiving positive reviews, selling a self-published book has proven to be quite challenging. Nicholas, Regina, and Ashika showcased their creativity with excellent promotion ideas that will help me spread the word, and I am forever grateful. They have bright futures ahead of them!

After receiving over two dozen additional submissions from Belmont Elementary students, I decided to host a second 'Draw a Jumboo Contest.' I'm thrilled to announce that Layla Russo is the first-place winner of this second contest! Layla's imaginative drawing of a bunnybird was excellent, and I can easily envision these creatures inhabiting the world of Jumbalot. A heartfelt thank you to Layla and all the students who took the time to create their unique jumboo characters.

I want to extend my heartfelt thanks to Belmont Elementary for inviting me to speak about my preteen fantasy novel, Journey to Jumbalot, on January 30! It was a joy to meet so many enthusiastic elementary students who were eager to learn about my book and my writing process. We had a great time discussing how I used to draw animal hybrids with crayons and markers when I was their age, and how some of those early creations inspired characters in my novel.

Additionally, I shared insights about my role as a multimedia designer at the USF College of Engineering. The students were particularly excited about two projects I showcased: the COE Sizzle Reel video and the Rocky mascot augmented reality Poster!

It was a wonderful experience accepting my book’s gold medal on stage at the annual Readers’ Favorite Book Awards. Journey to Jumbalot won a gold medal within the preteen fantasy category last year, but I was unable to attend since my wife and I were both sick with pneumonia.

I’d like to thank the event organizers at Readers’ Favorite for allowing me to accept my award this year on stage - it meant a lot to us both! We also attended the massive Miami Book Fair and enjoyed chatting with several fellow authors.

It feels wonderful to learn that this is the fifth literary award my book has won, and it gives me the push I need to continue the story of Alby and his adventures in Jumbalot.

The reps at Readers' Favorite informed me that we can attend next year's event, and they'll still allow me to walk on stage to accept my award. In addition, they quickly mailed me my gold medal.

Last month, I mailed three copies of my book, Journey to Jumbalot, to Harvard Elementary located in Toledo, Ohio. I was pleased to receive a message from Harvard's principal thanking me for the books and they will be placed in their school library. He invited me to speak to the students, but I told him I would provide a video message since I currently reside in Florida.

I attended Harvard between 1984-1990 and I have very fond memories from my childhood. I loved sledding down a large hill next to the school and my friends and I spent countless hours on the playground. I loved to draw during this time, and I think some of the earliest versions of my book's characters were sketched with crayons.

It's a great feeling to know that my books are now available in Harvard's library, and I hope it inspires one of their students to use their imagination to build fantastic, new worlds.

I love video animation and I thought it was time that my book was in need of a new book trailer. This new version showcases different illustrations, sound effects, and literary award information. One important addition is the transformation Alby undergoes once he harnesses the power of the Gem of Jumbalot.

I'm thrilled to announce the winner of the first Draw a Jumboo Contest - Jackson Herrig! Jackson drew a creative and colorful peacock-jaguar hybrid and I loved the Mesoamerican headdress and weaponry. This character looks like he's ready to join a battle within the world of Jumbalot. Jackson will receive two signed hardcover copies of Journey to Jumblaot and also a $30 Amazon gift card. Congratulations, Jackson!

I'd also like to thank everyone that participated in this contest. I loved the creativity involved with each submission and it was difficult choosing a winner. Keep using your imagination to dream up amazing characters!

The 2021 book awards season is officially over and I'm happy to announce that Journey to Jumbalot has won multiple literary awards! Below is a complete list of each award:

2021 Royal Palm Literary Award Competition: Gold Award for Published Fantasy

Mom's Choice Awards: Gold Recipient for excellence in family-friendly media, products, and services.

Global Book Awards: Silver Medal for Children's Action and Adventure Category

Purple Dragonfly Book Awards: Honorable Mention for New Author (Fiction Category)

It's a wonderful feeling to receive numerous awards from prestigious organizations. I started writing this book soon after I lost my cat and best friend, Albert, to poor health. He inspired me to follow my dream to write a children's book and I felt compelled to base the main character on his memory. Albert will live on through this book and many others I plan to write in the future.

It's hard to believe that it has been one year since we had to say goodbye to our pug named Lola. She had a heart of gold and it was beyond difficult for us when she succumbed to poor health. It was important to me to use her likeness as inspiration for an integral character within the world of Jumbalot - Queen Lola of Jowla. My wife and I love animals and our pets are loved members of our family.

My first author interview with BookView Reviews was recently posted on their website. BookView asked a wide range of questions regarding the book itself and what inspired me to create the world of Jumbalot. Below is the full interview:

             Do you find writing therapeutic?

Yes, writing is extremely therapeutic for a creative individual like me. It is beyond satisfying to visualize fantasy characters and place them into unique situations. The story plays out like a movie in my mind and I enjoy transferring those ideas/visions into the written word.

What was your favorite childhood book?

My favorite childhood book would have to be Where the Wild Things Are by Maurice Sendak. When I was a boy, my mom would take me to the local library, and I made a habit out of always checking out that book. More than anything, I loved the monster illustrations, and I would always try to draw them myself. Thirty-five years later I found myself illustrating characters for my own book called jumboos.

Tell us more about your book.

Journey to Jumbalot is a story about a brilliant engineer’s housecat named Alby and his adventure within a strange, new world. Alby’s best friend, Professor Wizoom, builds a triangular gateway and mysteriously vanishes. Alby’s compassion for his missing friend gives him the strength to venture through the gate and commence a sometimes-dangerous search. Jumbalot is inhabited by intelligent animal hybrids that include the following: menacing mantaravens, friendly froguars, terrifying wolvaraptors, courageous tigeroons, and much more. During his search, Alby dodges pulse blasts from jumboo pirates, befriends jumboos endowed with magical powers, and witnesses a massive battle between two jumboo armies.

Tell us a little about how this story first came to be. Did it start with an image, a voice, a concept, a dilemma, or something else?

The story began when I lost my cat named Albert after he succumbed to poor health. Albert was a plus-sized tuxedo cat and was my best friend for 13 years. Losing him lit a spark in me to write a book about a housecat for middle grade readers: my way of honoring his memory. The idea for Jumbalot began when I was much younger. I always fantasized about breathing life into a fantasy world filled with unusual creatures. I loved animal hybrids more than anything and desired to build a world like Wonderland, Oz, and Middle Earth, but inhabited with something different – jumboos. I loved to draw when I was a boy and I think some of my earliest jumboo characters were invented when I drew animal mashups with crayons.

Which scene or chapter in the book is your favorite? Why?

My favorite book chapter is one titled The Battle Begins. This takes place at the end of the book and showcases two jumboo armies battling for the future of their world. One side is led by a tyrant that has an insatiable lust for power while the other is led by a noble queen that is determined to save her world. Readers will enjoy the action, adventure, and conflict that occurs when both sides collide like tsunamis. I think readers will also enjoy reading how Alby adapts to this perilous situation to achieve his goal.

What do you hope readers will take away from this story?

My wife and I love animals and we encourage everyone to consider pet adoption. In the book, Alby was once a stray cat that was rescued by Professor Wizoom. This is one of many reasons Alby is determined to find his missing friend.

Veesha the vipanther (viper and panther hybrid) is the last descendant of Jumbalot's bravest ancient hero - Vesoto the Great. Veesha is also the wisest of jumboos due to her advanced knowledge of a jumboo belief system called the Jumbaloo Triangle. This triangle has three equal sides: compassion, bravery, and imagination. Those that possess all three traits will have the ability to do amazing things in the world of Jumbalot!

I guess pigs really do fly. Introducing Rozer's favorite mode of transportation: a pirate ship that sits on top of a monstrous jumboo named Ironside. Ironside is a warthawk (warthog, hawk, and hummingbird mix) and he is one of the most dangerous inhabitants of Jumbalot. Most warthawks are peaceful in nature, but Ironside swore allegiance to Rozer and blindly serves his cause.

I'm back to illustrating villains for my upcoming book. Above is a fiendish jumboo called a sharkomodo (shark and komodo dragon hybrid). Sharkomodos are loyal to Rozer and his group of raiders that terrorize all of Jumbalot. Unless you choose to live dangerously, it's best to keep your distance from these jumboos!

Monris is Rozer's second-in-command and a dangerous species of jumboo called a praying mantaraven (praying mantis, manta ray, and raven hybrid). It's safe to say that you wouldn't like encountering Monris or his underlings. Monris is equipped with two large mantis-like claws and flexible skin flaps allow him to glide through the air.

Troonix the tricerafox (triceratops and fox hybrid) is one of many jumboos that help Alby during his adventure within the world of Jumbalot. She has a huge heart and is always helping those in need; she gives Alby a very important item that saves him from certain peril more than once. I used to have a triceratops fossil skeleton display when I was a boy and creating hybrids with these amazing dinosaurs was a dream come true.

At first glance, you might think this creature is one of Jumbalot's antagonists. No, this illustration is a scene depicting a batarpon (bat and tarpon mix) guardian avoiding pulse blasts from Rozer's minions. Batarpons are very similar to bats, but they also have the ability to live underwater with the use of gills, webbed feet, and a long fishtail. They are noble protectors of the Kingdom of Jowla and are always on patrol circling above.

One week ago, my wife and I had to say goodbye to our pug named Lola. She was the sweetest dog you'd ever meet and it was important to me that she was featured as one of the characters in my book - Queen Lola. Pets are an important part of our family and we were devastated when we heard the news that is was time. We know she'll always be with us.

Introducing one of Jumbalot's fiercest warriors: tigeroon knights. Tigeroon knights (tiger, kangaroo, and raccoon mix) are yet another fierce warrior that exists in the world of Jumbalot. Tigeroons proudly serve Queen Lola and all have sworn to protect her and the Kingdom of Jowla. Tigeroons carry unusual swords that mechanically shift into pulse rifles when needed. This makes them extremely dangerous in close combat and from a distance.

The gem wields a magical power that not only creates life, but can alter and transform it. This is the most revered object in all of Jumbalot and plays an essential role to a rising conflict between the forces of Rozer and Queen Lola.

Creating a map of Jumbalot helped me visualize where the main protragonist, Alby, traveled during his journey throughout the story. Above is a partial preview of what will be presented in the book. It was important to me that Jumbalot was home to every form of known biome: grassland, desert, savanna, tundra, etc. It was also extremely fun to add unusual features to all of these biomes to make Jumbalot unique.

As mentioned on the home page of this site, I LOVE fantasy stories. I enjoy how fantasy can transport you to a strange, new world different from our own. How do the inhabitants survive in this world? What are their values? Are they peaceful, war-like, or a bit of both? These are some of the questions I had to answer while writing Journey to Jumbalot.

Much like our world, Jumbalot's inhabitants (jumboos) live in a world threatened by chaos. This gives the main protagonist, Alby, an opportunity to find the strength to not only survive, but to help others in desperate need. I think most of us can relate to those circumstances in today's day and age.

I've dreamt about breathing life into a world like Jumbalot since I was a child. I'm beyond thrilled to finally make that dream become a reality!

The first inhabitant of Jumbalot I created for my book is a small, boisterous creature named Fremmy. Fremmy is a species of jumboo called a froguar (frog and jaguar hybrid). Fremmy believes in helping others in need and decides to assist Alby with his journey through Jumbalot. He has quite a personality and Alby sometimes thinks he's more annoying than helpful. Since he was the first jumboo, he has the honor of greeting visitors with Alby on the homepage of this website!
